Most people do not want to think about the possibility of becoming disabled, but according to the Social Security Administration, studies show that a 20-year-old worker has a 3 in 10 chance of becoming disabled before reaching full retirement age. The Social Security Administration (SSA) pays disability benefits through two programs: (1) Social Security Disability and (2) Supplemental Security Income.
Social Security Disability (SSD or SSDI) Benefits
SSDI provides benefits to persons who meet the disability requirements established by the SSA and have worked long enough and recently enough to be “insured” for disability benefits. The amount of SSDI varies depending on the person’s previous contributions to the Social Security program through payroll taxes. When determining whether an individual is eligible for SSDI, the SSA will consider factors such as age, amount of work credits earned prior to disability, medical condition, length of disability and ability to perform other work.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Benefits
SSI is a needs-based program that provides benefits to individuals who have a qualifying disability and meet certain financial requirements. In order to be eligible for SSI benefits, an individual must fall below certain caps on income and resources.
Disability Support Benefits for Family Members
In certain situations, your family members may also be eligible for disability support benefits, including:
- Your spouse if 62 years or older;
- Your spouse, regardless of age, if he or she is caring for your child who that is younger than 16 and disabled;
- Your unmarried child if he or she is younger than 18 (or 19 if in elementary or secondary school full-time); and
- Your unmarried child over the age of 18 if he or she has a disability that began before age 22 (and the child’s disability meets the definition of disability for adults).
